An invisible thread connects the moment a note is written to the moment it resonates in a packed auditorium. For Gen Verde, this bond is more than technical or artistic—it is deeply spiritual. For each of the group’s nineteen artists, faith is a concrete experience rooted in daily life, rather than an abstract concept or a doctrine to be taught.
Spirituality as an exercise in proximity
Gen Verde’s journey is deeply rooted in a transformative encounter with Chiara Lubich’s charism of unity. This experience has redefined the lives of the nineteen artists, urging them to commit to building a united and fraternal world. This choice stems from the discovery of an immense love that has revolutionized their way of being, turning the Gospel prayer “That they all may be one” into a life mission dedicated to something greater. However, for the group, bringing this message to the stage is never a “top-down” process; faith is not an abstract concept or a doctrine to be taught, but a concrete experience rooted in daily life.
To translate this spirituality into music and dance, the group realized they couldn’t create in isolation; they had to truly connect with people, especially the youth. In a single year, they welcomed over eight hundred young people from around the world into their home, fostering a deep dialogue based on listening to the dreams, challenges, and hopes of the new generations. These encounters made it clear that bringing their inner life to the stage did not require sermons, but rather the authentic sharing of what they strive to live every day.
Gen Verde’s artistic inspiration is born from storytelling – sharing real-life experiences and showing how an encounter with God can change one’s perspective on peace and dialogue. Their songs tell of how fragilities, when lived together, can transform into strengths, and how only love can break the cycle of hatred and violence. Through this spirit of closeness, the group offers the audience a sense of purpose and faith. Born from quiet studio work and authentic sharing, their art resonates with a truth that breaks down every barrier.

Beyond borders: when lived experience becomes song
The concept of spirituality as an exercise in proximity finds one of its most profound expressions in the ability to transform social tensions into bridges of dialogue through art. A powerful example is the creation of the song “Tierra de Paz – Our Common Ground,” born from the collaboration between Nancy, from the United States, and Adriana, from Mexico. Despite political polarization and the divisions caused by migration between their countries, the two artists chose to let the spirit of unity prevail, convinced that no physical wall can ever divide those who share the same ideal.
Living this spirit of closeness means facing daily differences in all their complexity. Nancy and Adriana navigated diversities ranging from personal tastes and languages to deeply rooted cultural backgrounds—from differing ways of managing conflict to the contrasting historical perspectives learned since childhood. These very challenges allowed them to understand the roots of the tensions between their peoples, driving them to seek an alternative to social opposition.
The creative response to this challenge was a bilingual song in Spanish and English, embodying the “culture of encounter” through a fusion of rhythms and styles. In this piece, each identity remains distinct yet converges in a celebration of unity in diversity. The lyrics were inspired by real-life stories of proximity, such as the “Run4unity” youth relays along the border wall, poems from those living on the frontier, and the moving words of the Bishop of El Paso regarding migration.
At the heart of this spiritual and artistic journey was the discovery of a “common ground,” a path that required the courage to face open wounds. Drawing inspiration from Pope Francis’ reflection on the “gift of tears,” the artists realized that the secret to true closeness lies in making the suffering of others one’s own. By replacing judgment with empathy and shared suffering, it becomes possible to overcome every barrier and find the light needed to discover a common ground where we can walk together in peace.
The art of the Good Samaritan: listening and vulnerability
The art of the Good Samaritan is revealed in the journey of those who choose not to stop at compassion, but to act concretely for the well-being of others. This is evident in the path of a Gen Verde member who, at nineteen, found her life’s purpose in committing to a united world. Inspired by the prayer ‘that they all may be one’, she lived every experience with such intensity that no one was ever left behind, sharing her deepest struggles to walk alongside those in difficulty. The turning point came with the realization that she needed to answer a radical call, leaving everything behind to follow a path toward authentic happiness far from home.
Today, the shared life within the Focolare Movement and Gen Verde represents a personal way to spark a true social revolution through the arts. Every encounter becomes a space of proximity and vulnerability, whether performing on stage before a vast audience or leading drama workshops with young people expressing their struggles and joys. This mission is fulfilled through meetings with people of all ages and cultures—from prisoners to children, from believers to non-believers—allowing their needs to speak to her heart in order to offer concrete hope.
This form of closeness requires a daily commitment of prayer, listening, and effort to nurture a hope that is a real support for the world, not just a concept. Through this dedication, the artist fully invests herself to inspire others, making art a space where her openness to giving and facing difficulties becomes the seed of a deep, shared change.
A mission fueled by trust
Trust is the beating heart of Gen Verde’s mission—a legacy that dates back to the moment Chiara Lubich gifted them their first drum set. This total reliance on God is the starting point for every activity, but it also manifests concretely as mutual trust among the group members, who have chosen to dedicate their lives to bringing hope, peace, and dialogue through the performing arts. It is a mission fueled by an inner conviction that translates into tangible action, sparking a ripple effect of positivity that multiplies and reaches often unimaginable goals.
A powerful example of this transformative power occurred during the “Start Now” project in a particularly challenging school. Faced with unmotivated students from tough backgrounds and a wall of closed attitudes, the group refused to give up. Instead of yielding to discouragement, the artists renewed their commitment to look beyond appearances, convinced that every young person has something special to reveal through an extra dose of love and trust.
Returning to the classroom with this renewed momentum, Gen Verde’s members dedicated themselves to helping those young people discover the hidden value within themselves. Despite the teachers’ initial skepticism, the response was surprising: the students not only participated with dedication but also organized an extraordinary concert alongside the group, even actively getting involved in the behind-the-scenes work. The joy on their faces at the end was living proof of how a mission built on trust can spark a deep transformation – changing those who live it first, then radiating out to the world around them.
